**Carl Stahl Sling Calculator**

The sling calculator is provided to simplify the tasks of doing basic calculations necessary to determine the correct choice of sling.

It allows the use of the ‘uniform load’ method of rating (recommended for all general purpose slings) or the trigonometric method of rating.

The former assumes a single rating for a range of angles and in the case of a four legged sling, assumes that one leg will be redundant.

The latter may sometimes be used when selecting a sling which will be dedicated to a specific (and usually large) load. Using this method can result in economies, particularly on four legged slings where due to the assumption that all four legs take a fair share of the load, the size of chain, rope etc needed for each individual leg may be reduced. In addition for a specific load the sling may be designed to work at a specific included angle (or angle to the vertical of one leg). This again can result in the use of smaller components. IT IS EMPHASISED THAT THE TRIGOMETRIC METHOD SHOULD ONLY BE USED FOR SLINGS DEDICATED TO A SPECIFIC LOAD.

The calculator also allows you to change the factor of safety from the normally accepted figures (i.e. those recommended in current standards).THIS SHOULD ONLY BE DONE BY A COMPETENT PERSON.

The sling calculator will calculate the breaking strength of the chain, rope etc from which the sling leg is made and also the Working load limits of terminal fittings.

The second part of the calculator allows the calculation of either included angles or sling leg lengths for a particular sling configuration. This may be used to ensure that the chosen sling will suit the load to be lifted and will be working within it’s designed range of angles.
