Target Group

The First Aid at Work course gives First Aiders the essential knowledge and skills that they need to carry out their role and deal confidently with major and minor injuries and illnesses. It is suitable for any person who has been designated a First Aider at work.


Course content includes:

  • First aid priorities
  • The duties of employers and the legal framework
  • Using a First Aid box
  • Record keeping
  • Action in an emergency
  • Treating an unconscious casualty
  • Treating a casualty who is bleeding or wounded
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Shock
  • Injuries to bones and muscles
  • Burns and scalds
  • Eye injuries
  • Treating a casualty who has been overcome by gas or fumes
  • Poisoning


Assessment is by a multiple-choice exam on the final day, and a practical skills test. Successful delegates then receive an HSE-approved certificate, valid for three years. Before the expiry of this certificate, students who wish to remain First Aiders must take a shorter First Aid Requalification course, which will re-authorise them for a further three years.
